I’ve never understood why we have such a negative reaction to harmless nudity in this part of the world. I blame it all on the Church. The “method” of advertising seems quite odd, but frankly I don’t think people need to be freaking out about non-sexual nudity.
I think that the attitude is, as you say, religiously motivated. We have the same sort of thinking in some fundamentalist Islamic thought: that the mere sight of bare female skin is sexually arousing; even for other women.
